Configuration Drift
How instances gradually lose steerability — and how to spot it early.
ReadWhether a greenfield build or a grown instance: Schemes, Screens, Workflows, Permissions and groups are deliberately standardised and translated into governance, data quality, portfolio capability and the interfaces to connected systems — not merely administered.
The starting point depends on the project. In a greenfield set-up, Schemes, Screens, Workflows, fields, Permissions and groups are set up standardised from the ground up — with a consistent naming and governance standard that scales from the outset. For grown instances it begins with a brownfield analysis: which projects, Workflows, Schemes, fields and Permissions exist, what of this contributes to steering, and what only creates maintenance effort. In both cases, project and template architecture are unified, Workflows and field configurations are consolidated, and Permissions and groups are brought onto a comprehensible model. Portfolio views and Dashboards are built so that they have steering impact — not as a data display, but as a decision-ready overall picture across projects. The interfaces to connected systems are shaped as part of the work, and migrations are planned including data cleansing and verified after the move, so that the target system is robust.
Standards only hold if they are applied day to day. That is why user enablement, onboarding and a considered documentation logic in Confluence are part of the scope — the governance is only finished once teams can work with it without workarounds.
